As the weather is cooling down, the need to layer our outfits is no longer a desire but a necessity especially for those of us in the NorthEast. So let’s talk about layering for fall for a minute. I love layering and it’s one of my favorite ways to add colors, texture and/or volumes to my outfits during the fall and winter. But wearing jackets, cardigans/sweaters and scarves in ways that are trendy (and sexy!) yet not BULKY is where most people get bogged down.

Think about layering as decorating a cake. You want to start with a basic, thin-layered, fitted top (a tee or light blouse), like the crumb coating on a cake. This will keep your shape slim. I love sticking to solid colors just so that I can play with volumes and colors later. Add another layer of a sweater or cardigan and here is where I love adding color or patterns. Just like adding your main coat of frosting to your cake. Color is always desirable! Then add a coat or jacket. Keep these to solid colors (tan, navy or a bold one). Finally my favorite part, the sprinkles on the cake, add your accessories; a scarf (definitely!!), necklace, watches etc.

I picked out a few layers from ModCloth that I love! I’m sure you have all heard about ModCloth… this one of a kind online store with unique vintage and classic clothes and my go-to for dresses for special occasions. Their fall collections for sweaters and cardigans are what inspired these layered outfits today!
